Apple fritter cake has all the delicious flavor of a really amazing homemade apple fritter, but without the fuss of making yeast donuts and having to fry anything. I’m delighted to share this Skillet Apple Fritter Cake recipe from Successful Homemakers with you for this week’s Try It Friday Recipe.
Each Friday, I try a new recipe I’ve never made before and share the results with you. When I saw Successful Homemaker’s apple fritter cake recipe, I knew I had to try it with some of the amazing apples I was given from a neighbor’s backyard tree.

Successful Homemakers’ recipe calls for baking the cake in a 10″ cast iron skillet, and I’ll bet that makes the texture of this cake even more amazing (I know it does for cornbread). But the instructions do say that if you don’t have one, you can also make the recipe in a 9×13 pan. That’s the version of the recipe I chose to make.
Half of the butter is mixed into the cake batter, but the other half gets melted in the pan. If you thought you were an edge-of-the-pan person before, you haven’t tasted anything yet. If you’re a die-hard-middle-of-the-pan person like I am, this technique will make you a convert to coveting the edge pieces.
Half of the cake batter gets placed in the pan of hot, melted butter.
Then the apple filling is spread over the bottom layer of batter, and the remaining batter is spread on top, sandwiching those delicious spiced apple slices between two layers of tender cake.
For last week’s Try It Friday feature, I made a homemade apple pie filling recipe that was absolutely amazing. The ingredients for that pie filling are so similar to the filling layer ingredients in this recipe, that I’ll bet if you had a big batch of pre-made homemade apple pie filling, you could just go ahead and use that in this recipe.
I’ll try making this recipe again with that variation and report back. No no, it’s no hardship, really.
While the cake is baking, I mixed up the simple glaze. You can’t go wrong with such classic glaze ingredients, but I think next time I make the cake, I might make the glaze using apple cider as the liquid in the glaze instead of milk.
The cake has kind of a craggy look, just like a traditional apple fritter, doesn’t it?
Add the glaze to the hot cake, and it looks even more like a delicious, giant apple fritter.
This moist and flavorful fall cake has all the fabulous flavor of a homemade apple fritter, but with far less work. It’s like a combination between a cake and a fritter and a delicious bread pudding. Head over to get the full apple fritter cake recipe and bake one (or more!) for yourself this fall.
