Take advantage of apple season and make this amazing apple pie filling now, and can or freeze it to use later. I’m testing out this highly recommended apple pie filling recipe from V and Co for this week’s Try it Friday recipe.
I’ve always peeled and cut fresh apples whenever I’ve made an apple pie in the past, but I was recently given a ton of delicious apples from a neighbor’s tree, and I knew it was the perfect time to try making homemade canned (or frozen) apple pie filling to save this incredible fall bounty.
My friend Eva has been raving about this apple pie filling recipe for years, and for years I’ve been meaning to try it. Could there be a more perfect Try-It Friday recipe?
Canned (or Frozen) Homemade Apple Pie Filling Ingredients:
- apples, peeled and sliced
- sugar
- corn starch
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
- salt
- lemon juice
Vanessa’s technique for making the homemade apple pie filling is quick and easy.
The sugar, cornstarch, water, and spices are cooked together until the mixture thickens and turns clear.
Then slices of uncooked, peeled and cored apples are added to the mixture–and, ta da, it’s apple pie filling!
I did find that the amount of water/cornstarch mixture was a little too generous for the amount of apples listed in the recipe for my personal tastes, but that was easily adjusted by slicing and adding more apples until I had the perfect ratio for my preferences.
Canned homemade apple pie filling makes an amazing homemade gift, so I made some free printable tags that you can add to your jars of the amazing apple filling.

Why I Love this Homemade Apple Pie Filling:
- It cans uncooked apples (called a cold packed technique), which makes the filling so much fresher and tastier than store-bought pie filling.
- You can preserve a huge amount of fresh apples to enjoy later in the year.
- It makes an amazing homemade gift.
- It tastes amazing!
Freezing vs. Canning Homemade Pie Filling
Not into canning? I’d like to get the equipment to do that at some point, but I don’t have it right now. Luckily, my friend Eva (who told me about this pie filling recipe), isn’t a canner, either, and reports that it works brilliantly as a frozen recipe instead.
Eva also reports that the filling is amazing when paired with the cobbler topping from her favorite cobbler recipe. I tried the combination, and she’s right. This is a seriously delicious apple cobbler.
